BARCELO FORESTRY FOUNDATION
Created in 1983 in response to a serious concern for the preservation of our country's natural resources, the Barceló Forestry Foundation is today an important contributor to community projects. These include reforestation; the funding of ecological studies; erosion studies; ecology camps for students and sponsorship of seminars.
One of the basic programs is the preservation of the genetic integrity of various trees. In a joint venture with the University of Santo Domingo, Barceló Forestry Foundation developed a garden of endemic palms to preserve the Royal Palm as well as other native species of palm.
Another major concern is the encouragement of self-sufficiency through the creation of food forests in the rural areas and the batey, where breadfruit, avocado, mango and other tropical fruit trees are now being cultivated.
Together with the Softball Federation, the reforestation of the Olympic Center was launched in Febraury of 1995 by the Barceló Forestry Foundation, in order to guarantee the beauty and ecological balance of the sports for future generations.
